Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug and Chat Noir is a cartoon following two teenaged super-heroes protecting Paris from the evil Hawk Moth (or Papillon in the French dub). I first started watching it to distract myself from a sad time in my life, when my cousin introduced me after we lost her mum. The show grew on me and I learned to love the playful storylines, underlying narrative, and kind-hearted protagonists.

Miraculous: Contingency follows the same characters after the superheroes’ time-travelling ally makes a catastrophic mistake and accidentally creates a new timeline - starting just before the end of the show’s Season 3. The break between the ‘Prime’ timeline and the ‘Contingency’ timeline caused several powers to work slightly differently, forcing Ladybug and Chat Noir to adapt to a new world, as they slowly learn what has happened. For a full breakdown of the timeline in Miraculous: Contingency please see the timeline page.

It’s important to me to assure readers that this is not an attempt to improve on the show, but just a chance to explore another set of possibilities. Since I started writing Miraculous: Contingency, back during season 3, the show has released two more seasons, four specials, a parallel universe film, and the sixth season is nearly ready to release. I deliberately didn’t watch anything past the finale of season 3 until I’d finished writing the first draft, then I caught up. I was impressed. The showrunners took the story in directions I couldn’t have imagined. I was proud that some of the plot points I’d come up with found a similar mirror in the canon narrative and, when I wrote the second draft, I brought in some more elements of lore that I’d learned while watching the rest of the show.

In an ideal world, I’d love for Jeremy Zag and/or Tom Astruc to see this and say “this could be a fun side series of novels” and reach out to me. As this is not an ideal world, I will happily settle for being able to share my alternative storyline with other fans, and hopefully not be punished for working in their world without permission. I hope you all enjoy reading Miraculous: Contingency as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.

What is Miraculous: Contingency?

Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug and Chat Noir is a multi-national production, with dubs in many different languages. For preference, I enjoy watching the show in French with English subtitles. This means that several character names are slightly different from the English dub. When writing Miraculous: Contingency I’ve mostly used the French names for characters, unless I have another reason to use the English. On the other hand, when it comes to the superheroes’ transformation phrases, I have used the English dub’s personalised descriptions, instead of the French’s generic “Transform Me!”

The most major difference is that Hawk Moth, the main villain of the story, is called Papillon through most of Miraculous: Contingency. Rest assured, this will also be addressed in the narrative.

Otherwise, I write in British English, because that’s my first language. There may be a few more ‘U’s and fewer ‘Zeds’ than an American audience might expect, but I don’t think it detracts from the story as a whole.

A note on language

  • When I started watching Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug and Chat Noir like many people I really hated Chloé Bourgeois.

By the midpoint of season 3, the redemption arc Chloé had begun had pulled her up to being one of my favorite characters in the show. I was halfway through Season 1 of Miraculous: Contingency when the show’s Season 3 finale Heart Hunter & Miracle Queen were released. I was really upset by the way Chloé’s character had been handled in that sequence and subsequently.

I can’t make excuses for Chloé’s behaviour, she was an appalling bully and narcissist, but in the show she was trying to to get better. So, a major sub-plot of Miraculous: Contingency became exploring what might have happened if Chloé was given another chance, before Papillon could lure her back to his side.

Miraculous: Contingency is about Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, about Ladybug and Chat Noir. The main story always follows them, but there will be sub-plots following Chloé, Kagami Tsurugi, Alya Césaire, Nino Lahiffe, and all the other characters we love, plus a few brand-new characters and even some new Kwamis.
