  • I picked Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye as the song for this episode. Although that’s about a romantic relationship, the general themes seemed to touch on what Nino and Michael have been going through.

    Nino

This episode feels quite filler-y. I wanted to have several of the core team make appearances across Season 1 so that it’s not a complete surprise when we get to the season finale. I created a new character to be one of Nino’s friends from before the show, and a previous hobby that Nino used to have. Even so, this just feels like a placeholder, with more narrative coming in the episodes to follow.

Despite that, I feel like we had some fun with Nino’s character here. I wanted to bring Michael back a bit more often, as a friend for Nino who’s not part of the team. I never managed that, but the character does get a mention in a future episode.

    Miraculous Strength

When I wrote the first draft, I wrote assuming that being a superhero was increasing Marinette and her friends’ strength and agility, because that was what it looked like was happening in the show. When I got back around, it seemed as though that wasn’t strictly true. When I did the last draft of Legion I properly introduced the idea that Marinette, Adrien, and Chloé were starting to exhibit increased strength. Not to the levels they have when they are transformed, but still far beyond a normal person of their size and age.

Here we’re learning that Nino has had to step back from his old sporting habits because his increased strength. There are other changes coming, but we’ll find out about them as the time goes on.

    Arbalest

The nerd in me has a lot to blame for this Akuma. In the original draft, Arbalest was called “Catapult” but in the second draft I changed it to a different historical siege weapon because Catapult was too similar to Carapace, given he was featuring heavily in this episode. There’s also a fun twist, in that the weapon Arbalest uses to attack Paris is neither an arbalest nor a catapult, but a trebuchet. That annoys a lot of the people who proof-read this episode for me.
