Episode 5 - The Spoiler

I’m Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage felt like a good fit for The Spoiler, given that he just wants to ruin other people’s happiness. He’s only happy when other people aren’t.

This is quite a childish reason to become Akumatised, I’ll freely admit. But I’m sure there are a lot of us out there who get upset when we get told the big twist before we watch a show. Papillon likes to prey on the first impulses people have. I get the feeling that if someone corrupted the power of the Butterfly Miraculous like this for so long, they would develop a disdain for humanity, only seeing their worst impulses.

Originally, I’d intended for Guy and The Spoiler to be a recurring villain, someone who actively wanted to become Akumatised. That didn’t work out, not least because there appears to be no way of remembering what happened while you were Akumatised, although The Spoiler does make one re-appearance in the story and remains significant for other reasons.

Luka

I decided very early on that Luka would know about Marinette and Adrien at this point in the story. He’s usually quite a smart character and the magic of the Miraculous is changing. He’s trying not to let them know, which isn’t a very smart decision, but I only said usually. In Season 2 we’ll find out more about why he was able to work it out, but it ties in with the strength/agility enhancements that now happen to the superheroes.
